| Packsaddle Leather Co is a family partnership of Steve,
Ben and Jock Craigie - father and sons respectively.
Steve started the company in the late 80’s due to
a perceived demand for the type of products we have since developed. It
was also a secondary income for the family property.
Almost their entire lives have been involved in the farming
and grazing industry with Ben and Jock growing up on stations in Central
West NSW.
A well-known saddler from Wagga Wagga – Gary Hiscock,
taught Steve how to draught and cut patterns and to cut and stitch the
bags. The market first started at The Rocks in Sydney where ‘The
Sheepskins Shop’ purchased the majority of stock being produced.
It wasn’t long before Ben and Jock joined the partnership
and production increased and many more retailers were selling the Packsaddle
range.
Quality Control
The final decision lies with Jock, being in charge of dispatch, however
quality control starts with Ben as purchaser of raw materials. Each step
of production is a quality control exercise and success is directly related
to this.
Leather
Stocks of leather are purchased from major tanneries in NSW, QLD and Victoria.
The majority is Cow Hide although some pig skin is used as lining. Apart
from the Veg tanned leather which is used for straps and belts the majority
is chrome tanned, the same as used in the shoe industry. The weight or
thickness varies from 1mm (lining) which is light weight to medium at
1.5mm and heavy is 2.3 to 2.5 mm.
Hardware
All hard ware is solid brass with an antique finish. |
